WITH the minimum of fuss, holders Newcastle West (NCW) are safely through to the semi-finals of the Limerick Senior Football Championship.

And, that is with the luxury of a round to spare in a competition the Magpies are aiming to win for a third year on the trot.

The westerners’ followed-up on earlier wins over Fr. Casey’s, St. Kieran’s and Claughan with a 2-10 to 0-11 victory over previous Group One table-toppers Kildimo/Pallaskenry (KP) at Seán Finn Park, Rathkeale on Thursday.

Brian O’Sullivan and Iain Corbett (penalty) grabbed goals in either half for NCW, who have relegation threatened Oola as opposition in the concluding group fixture in a few weeks’ time.

Despite the loss, KP are through to the quarter-finals, as are Fr. Casey’s after a local derby 1-14 to 1-9 defeat of St. Kieran’s at Newcastle West.

Martin Scannell and David Ward were best for Casey’s.

St. Kieran’s, Oola and Claughaun are all out of contention to reach the knock-out phase.

In Group Two, quarter/semi-final bound Monaleen proved too strong for Ballysteen, 1-17 to 1-11, at Ballingarry.

For the victors, full-forward Daniel Daly starred with a contribution of eight points.

An overall clearer picture from this group will be known after the completion of other matches within over the weekend.
