CATTLE rustling is something that might be expected in an old John Wayne movie, but Gardaí in Limerick have this week launched a search for ‘outlaws’ who made off with a small herd under cover of darkness.
The thieves stole 13 Friesian bullocks from a farm at Boher, County Limerick, between 7pm last Wednesday (August 16) and 9am the following morning.
“All of the cattle were around a year and a half old. This is a very unusual crime and thankfully is something that does not happen very often,” said Garda John Finnerty.
“All cattle have ear tags which contain a number specific to that animal, therefore when cattle are bought and sold there is full transparency.”
Garda Finnerty said it is most likely that the thieves used a cattle truck to load the beats up and to take them away, adding that the crime was “probably done in the hours of darkness”.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who might have information about the fate of the valuable animals or the people who took them.
“If you live in the Boher area, or were passing through Boher and observed lights from a truck or any other form of suspicious activity, please contact Gardaí at Roxboro Station on 061 214340.”
