Owners of Japanese import cars urged to take precautions amid spike in thefts

Henry Street Garda Station.

OWNERS of Japanese imported vehicles have been warned to take extra care of car thieves operating in Limerick.

The imported cars are targeted because, unlike in the EU, Japanese cars are not required to fit immobilisers, making them more susceptible to easy theft.

“An immobiliser is an additional security device on a car that prevents it from starting unless the correct key or key fob is used.”

“Thieves specifically target Mazda Demio models, the Toyota Aqua model, and Toyota Vitz models,” explained Garda John Finnerty of Henry Street Garda Station.

This comes as the owner of a red Toyota Vitz had a close call earlier this month when a thief tried to steal their car but found himself unable to do so.

According to Garda John Finnerty, the thief attempted to steal the Toyota hatchback between the hours of 12pm and 9pm on Thursday, August 3.
