THE SCHOOL community in Limerick is in shock this week having learned that a much loved and respected former teacher was killed in a road accident.
Michael Lorigan, (70) who was a teacher in Limerick for all of his professional life, was cycling at 12.30pm on Wednesday, August 16 when he was involved in a collision with a car.
The incident occurred on the N67 at Baunmore, Co Clare and Michael was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time or have dash cam footage to contact them,
A native of Kilmurry McMahon, Co Clare, Mr Lorigan had retired from teaching in the Model School in Limerick City, where he began his career in the mid-70’s.
Having made his home in Kilkishen, he had a great love of sport was passionate about GAA, having played underage and adult football with Shannon Gaels.
He was described his week by past pupils and colleagues as “an inspirational and dedicated teacher” who embraced new and progressive teaching methods from his first day in the classroom.
In later years, Mr Lorigan became a keen cyclist, and took part in the Clare 250 mile cycle many times.
He is survived by his wife Dympna (Maguire), and sisters, Patsy (Neylon), Noreen (Browne) and Jean, as well as uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, grandniece and grandnephews, sisters in law, brothers in law, former teaching colleagues, and his large circle of friends.
Michael will repose at his home in Kilkishen, tomorrow (Saturday) from 5pm to 8pm. He will be laid to rest on Sunday (August 20) in the local cemetery in Kilmurry McMahon, after funeral mass St. Mary’s Church, Kilmurry McMahon at 11am.
In a statement, Gardaí said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N67 in the Baunmore area between 12pm and 1pm on Wednesday, August 16 are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
