AN INVESTIGATION is ongoing into an alleged violent confrontation which saw a number of Gardaí on the receiving end of glass bottles and a bicycle being thrown at them.

The incident took place on Sunday, July 30, in the Crecora Avenue area of Limerick City.

Footage of the incident circulating online shows a number of young men, some hooded, accosting a Garda Armed Support Unit car, as well as throwing a glass bottle and hurling abuse at Garda members.

At one point in the footage, a young man can be heard shouting “f–king scumbags” at responding Gardaí.

Footage also shows a member of the Armed Support Unit spraying a hooded young man, who had been approaching him wheeling a bicycle, with what appears to be pepper spray.

Local sources claim the violent outburst occurred when Gardaí were making attempts to remove a “small horse truck” from the area.

A separate clip also shows a young man throwing what appears to be a bicycle at another Garda vehicle as it exits the Ballinacurra Weston estate.

A statement from An Garda Síochána said that the service “does not comment on third party material”, but confirmed investigations are ongoing into “public order incidents which occurred in the Crecora Avenue area of Limerick City on Sunday, 30th of July 2023”.

“There are no arrests at this time,” the statement confirmed.
