Limerick City food bank closed due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’

PEOPLE in Limerick so hard hit by the cost of living crisis that they have had to turn to food banks for help were shocked this morning (Friday July 28) to arrive at the Mid West Simon food bank to find it shut.

Regular clients of the food bank arrived at Christ Church on Glentworth Street to find a notice saying the distribution had been cancelled “due to unforeseen circumstances”, with a phone number for people to contact if they are in an emergency food situation.

When contacted by the Limerick Post, a spokesman for Mid West Simon said that the charity hopes to have the food bank back in operation as early as next week.

When asked, the spokesman would not elaborate on why the bank had to close unexpectedly, but confirmed that it is not because of a lack of donated food.

“There is a mobile phone number on the notice and anyone who has an emergency should contact that number and we will get food out to them,” he said.

The spokesman could not confirm a guarantee of when the service will resume but said it is hoped it will operate as normal next week.
