A LIMERICK nun has clarified that while she remains steadfastly in support of the Limerick hurlers ahead of the All-Ireland Final on Sunday, that does not extend to turning the host green in the run up to the big day.

Sr Patricia Coughlan explained to media that the altar inside St Andrew’s Church in Kilfinane had been adorned in green and white in support of the Limerick hurlers who are in a bid for four All-Ireland titles in a row this Sunday.

However, Sr Coughlan wished to clarify that while everyone at St Andrew’s Church is rooting for Limerick there are no plans to turn the host green.

She said: “Further to coverage in a number of national and local media online and print publications today, as well as references on radio stations regarding my avid support for Limerick hurlers ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland Final, and the related display at St Andrew’s Church in Kilfinane, I wish to reiterate this support.”

“I also wish to reiterate how the display emphasises the great life lessons we can get from our hurlers, not least around the value of ‘team work’ and the spirit of community.”

“However, contrary to those reports, there was no mention by me or anyone else to media of an intention to turn the host green in the run up to Sunday’s game,”  Sr Coughlan continued.

“Hurling means a lot but there is only one true altar, one true host, one body of Christ. This stands above all else.”

Sr Coughlan also said that the Bishop would be lighting a candle to support the hurlers.

“Nonetheless, we remain fully behind Limerick here in Kilfinane and are proudly part of that wider Limerick team. We’ve enlisted support where we can, with petitions and prayers ahead of Sunday.”

“I know also that our Bishop here, Bishop Brendan Leahy, will be lighting a candle at the Limerick Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock on Saturday. May it burn brightly!” she concluded.
