He’s a keeper: Limerick’s long serving Number One

LONG-SERVING Nickie Quaid (34) has kept goal for Limerick across a remarkable 135 matches.

He came onto the scene way back in 2009, receiving that initial call-up from then manager Justin McCarthy. Now a two-time All-Star (2020 and 2022), Quaid was previously shortlisted for such recognition as far back as 2012.

During his long tenure, Quaid has produced a series of jaw-dropping saves, but perhaps his greatest was a flicked dispossession from Séamus Harnedy in the closing moments of Limerick’s 2018 All-Ireland defining semi-final with Cork at Croke Park.

Quaid’s heroics denied the Rebels a match-winning goal, and the rest is history (four All-Ireland title wins, and a distinct possibility of another on Sunday).

His father, the late Tommy, earned deserved All-Star recognition following Limerick’s 1992 National League triumph.

A Quaid has played on our flagship team in every decade since the 1950s, starting with twin brothers Jack and Jim, then Tommy (Jack’s son), followed by Joe (Jim’s son), and, of course, Nickie.
