THERE are some team/tee sponsorship opportunities available for the upcoming Andrew Sexton Golf Classic (Bruree) at Charleville on July 21 and 22.

The young father-of-five was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma of the bone, a rare form of cancer, and funds raised will help towards general family expenditure.

According to the GoFundMe page, “while Andrew was working on the 26th of October 2022 he noticed that when using a sledgehammer he could swing it one way but struggled a bit while going the other way.”

“He continued working away and after work, he went to hurling training with his son and club-mates in Bruree GAA. While going through a hurling drill Andrew suddenly fell to the ground clutching his arm and he was in a lot of pain.”

“The club’s first aider, who happened to be Andrews’s brother, treated Andrew. The thought was that Andrew had badly pulled a muscle in the upper arm but the worry at the time was the extreme pain Andrew was in.”

“There was a suspicion that it might be a break but that it would be unusual as it was on the upper arm and also because it was such a basic hurling drill that Andrew was performing at the time. Andrew was brought to Limerick University Hospital immediately.”

Andrew was told he had suffered a broken arm, but was called back in the following day for more tests. These tests confirmed that Andrew had a rare form of bone cancer, Leiomyosarcoma.

The fundraiser aims to raise €15,000, and at the time of writing, almost €14,500 had been raised.

Details are available on GoFundMe.com.
