Flexible learning a strong way forward with TUS

THE Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is making more than 1,500 flexible learning places, worth more than €8.5million, available for the next academic year.
These Human Capital Initiative (HCI) and Springboard skilled-focused programmes were developed following detailed engagement with local industry.
Funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), HCI and Springboard are focused on increasing capacity in higher education for skills-focused programmes, designed to meet the priority skills needs of industry in the region and nationally. These programmes range from Level 6 to Level 9 and include shorter certificate couses right up to post graduate diplomas. 
Places are funded 90 per cent for those in employment and 100 per cent for unemployed people.
Dean of Flexible and Worked-based Learning at TUS, Seamus Hoyne, said the new courses are targeted at areas with identified skills gaps, particularly those identified by industry and businesses in the regions. 
“These programmes are designed to meet industry needs following detailed engagement with businesses and industry leaders in the regions. The programmes support career progression as well as entry into new areas and disciplines. The exciting range of programmes cover disciplines such as business, marketing, IT, engineering, science, and others, so there is something there for everyone,” he said.
The TUS programmes are delivered on a part-time basis, allowing students to work and learn while gaining a recognised, professional qualification.
