City centre playground to close to facilitate installation of accessible new facilities

A CITY centre playground will close today (Monday, June 26) for a number of weeks to facilitate the installation of a new playground.

The playground in the People’s Park in Limerick City will close today so that a new, fully inclusive playground can be installed, a first for the city.

The current playground will be completely replaced, which is the basis for the playground having a complete closure while works are carried out.

In a statement, Limerick City and County Council apologised for any inconvenience that the closure may cause.

Last month it was announced by the council that the city centre park would get a new playground that would be inclusive and accessible for children of all ages and abilities.

According to the council, the playground will include fully wheelchair accessible equipment, including a roundabout, a trampoline, and sand digger.

A wide slide on the embankment of the existing park will allow kids and carers to slide together. The swing sets will contain a large bucket-moulded seat and lockable ‘rollercoaster’ style harness, which allows children without the muscular strength and co-ordination to remain upright in a swing seat to still enjoy the swinging sensation with their peers.

The new park will also feature a sensory area, which will have numerous games panels, musical panels, and a storytelling area.

Speaking at the time of the announcement, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley, said: “The new playground will be a game changer for children of all abilities. The current playground has come to its natural end of life and a new playground is needed for the city.”

“The redevelopment will ensure that kids have a safe and exciting environment to play together, explore new equipment, and let their imaginations run free,” Mayor Foley said.
