Works on O’Connell Street are ‘largely complete’, says Council

Work under way on an earlier section of the O'Connell Street redevelopment project.

“WHEN do Limerick City and County Council expect all work on O’Connell Street to be completed?”

This was the question from Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely at last week’s Metropolitan District meeting.

Cllr Kiely also asked the council executive when the people of Limerick can expect the three-person cleansing team to be appointed.

According to Senior Executive Engineer for the Council’s Roads, Traffic and Cleansing Department, Liam Browne, the works on O’Connell Street are largely complete with the exception of localised work adjacent to some of the junctions.

ARUP Consulting Engineers, Mr Browne explained, will determine the contractual completion date following final inspection of the works.

“The resolution of any snags identified by ARUP will be addressed up to and after completion as is standard practice in the industry,” he told Cllr Kiely.

Limerick City and County Council, Mr Browne continued, has approved the appointment of the three-person team, however the Department of Local Government approval is required as this results in an increase in overall staff numbers.

“Human Resources have sought this approval and have identified the need for a quick decision by the Department. As soon as approval is received, Human Resources will work with existing panels to appoint staff,” he concluded.
