IN-FORM Sarah Lavin (Emerald Athletics Club) is a live contender for a medal at the European Games, which commenced in Krakow on Wednesday and will continue through in the Polish city until July 2.

The Lisnagry 100m hurdler cruised through her opening race at the European Athletics Team Championship, which is being held as part of this year’s European Games, posting a superb 12.82, the second fastest of her career.

“It was a really good performance,” she said afterwards. “I tried to treat it like round one of a championship. 12.82 is a good run at any time of the day.”

The Emerald athlete represents possibly Ireland’s best chance of a medal at the Championship.

A full-time professional for the past couple of years, on the competitiveness of the sport she commented: “It’s a ruthless game of literally hundredths of seconds and if you’re standing on your feet and it’s costing you one or two hundredths, it matters – if it costs you half a second, you might as well not be showing up.”

She added: “You have to trust you have the right people around you and I’m lucky to have that. I want to make Paris (venue 2024’s Olympic Games) the best I can do, and these Indoors and the Worlds in August will be a strong build-up to it.

“This is my time now.”

The final of the Women’s 100m Hurdles is Saturday afternoon.
