Three members of one family arrested on bench warrants in Limerick court

Kilmallock District Court

THREE members of one family appeared before a Limerick court this week, having been arrested on bench warrants for failing to appear to answer various charges.

Judge Patricia Harney was dealing with matters in Kilmallock District Court when a Garda witness said there were objections to bail for the teenage member of the family as he had 11 bench warrants issued against him for not turning up in court.

Similarly, his father and mother had failed to appear when cases against them were to be heard in court, and they too had bench warrants issued.

None of the people before the court can be legally named as it would identify the teenager.

Their solicitor told Judge Harney that, in relation to the teenage boy, there were “administrative difficulties” concerning the dates and courts he was to appear before and matters had “gone off the radar” for some time.

Charges were spread over courts in Listowel and Kilmallock and there are “huge logistical difficulties” getting from the family’s home to the courts for the 10.30am starting time, their solicitor said.

Judge Harney said she would give them a second chance after the boy’s father undertook to ensure he attended court on the next date.

“But I am concerned that he is a young person and a number of these charges concern thefts of vodka,” she said.

The young man’s case was adjourned to July 6 in Listowel.
