HOSPITAL is a village in mourning following the death of former Limerick County Council Cathaoirleach Eddie Creighton at University Hospital Limerick on Monday.
A carpenter by trade, he had a distinguished political career. He was originally a Fianna Fáil party member, first elected in 1991 in the Kilmallock district. He kept his seat as a Progressive Democrats councillor in the 1999 and 2004 local elections.
He ran in the 1997 general election as a Progressive Democrats candidate in Limerick East alongside Des O’Malley, the former party leader.
Mr Creighton served as Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council in 2006 before retiring from political life in 2009.
Tributes have been paid to the former Cathaoirleach for his unstinting work for the local area and for his generosity.
He is survived by his wife Peg, sons Denis and Mark, daughter Mary, daughter in law Antoinette, partners Hamish and Paula, grandchildren William, Emily, Thomas and Eoghan, great-grandson Casey, nephews, relations, neighbours and friends.
He is reposing at O’ Leary’s Funeral Home, Hospital on Thursday (tomorrow) evening from 5.30pm to 8pm.
Requiem Mass on Friday at 11.30am in St. John the Baptist Church, Hospital followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
