VIDEO games retailer GameStop has announced the closure of all of its Irish stores, including three in Limerick City.

In a post on its Facebook page, GameStop wrote “we are disappointed to announce that GameStop Ireland will be closing.”

The company has 35 stores in Ireland with its Limerick outlets based in the Parkway Shopping Centre, the Crescent Shopping Centre and the city centre branch on William Street.

The company had been winding down its Irish operations for some time before the closure was announced, in March it was announced that the store would no longer offer gift cards, sell pre-owned consoles or facilitate pre-ordering of products.

The company’s Irish arm reported pre-tax losses of over €6 million in 2022, bringing the company’s total accumulated losses to €40 million.

According to the Business Post, at the end of 2022, the company employed 239 people nationally.

The retailer is now holding closing down sales to recoup some of the losses.

While there has been no date confirmed for the closure of stores, it’s expected to be sometime in the early summer.
