LIMERICK dancers are clicking their heels in joy having covered themselves in glory both in qualifying for the World Irish Dance Championships in Canada and bringing home two major awards.

A whole year of training and preparation at every level was the effort made by the dancers who carried Limerick’s reputation for dance greatness over to Montreal in Canada last month.

Dancers from Scoil Rince Ui Bhriain had a team of 11 dancers qualify for the event including Jessie Hui (under-11), Bronagh O’Leary (under-14), Rachel Kennedy and Darragh O’Leary (under-17).

Two coveted World Globes made their way back to Limerick for Rachel Kennedy, Dooradoyle taking fourth place in the under-17 category and Bronagh O’Leary, Nenagh placing fifth in the under-14 category.

The World Globes were commissioned by Michael Flatley 15 years ago and are awarded to the top five dancers in the World in each age group.

“The Globes are the Oscars of Irish dance, they are every dancer’s dream,” Sharon O’Brien, teacher at Scoil Rince Ui Bhriain and original member of Michael Flately’s “Lord of The Dance.”

The ethos of the school is to teach our native dance form in a fun and enjoyable manner.  I am so proud of each of the World qualifiers.  The hard work, discipline and dedication by these dancers is to be admired and of course it couldn’t be done without the support of their families.”
