THE Record Room put on another banger of a show last week with popular band Scustin headlining the night with multiple support acts, all drawing in a crowd of faithful followers singing throughout their sets.
First act of the night was the band Eskimo with Luke Kelly as lead vocalist. Their set consisted of mostly upbeat rock which had people up and dancing and an audible, sad awww could be heard when they were finished.
The next act was local musician Hugo Lynn who is normally part of a band, which he composes for, but he was flying solo that night, just him, a guitar and pre mixed tracks. The crowd’s favourite songs were the last two of the set were newest single Sleep Talk which was like a dreamy lullaby and Skin and Tin which gave swing vibes.
The third act Shroomie, who seemed to have attracted a large crowd of friends for the gig, took the stage in very distressed jeans and a chaotically personalised guitar(ahem Chicken Hut bag ahem) and face paint. He first used a concertina to rile the crowd up before picking up his guitar. He mentioned how his first song was inspired by “a man in Top Pizza who is freaking me out!” which was very relatable to the young crowd and the nightlife in Limerick these days. One of his guitar strings even broke during his set but he kept going like an absolute legend.
Then came the main act of the night- Scustin!
Scustin’s music can be described as “post funk” and is known for humorous storytelling through song with a jazzy undertone and always putting on a very energetic and interactive performance.
As the crowd was cheering so loudly at the beginning, the lead; Larry asked drummer Wally to redo the intro, while Larry hyped up the crowd yelling “Are we gonna knock their socks off?!”, giving great energy and insight for the chaos ahead.
Larry then described their vibes as “pub talking” with a community focus and for everyone to look after each other, as he led into scatting for the first number.
Later in the set, Wally performed an insane drum solo which had the crowd chanting his name throughout the night.
Throughout the set, multiple people were brought on stage to sing along, the funniest being when Larry pulled out a Matt Damon mask.
Attendees were constantly laughing, dancing and singing along, alternating between chanting “one more choon” and “Wally! Wally! Wally!”.
The night ended with everyone in a dance circle with Larry even coming into the audience, turning into a mosh pit, dancing to the trad style music. Scustin ended on another drum solo, thanking everyone for attending before exiting the stage.
Everyone was on a high as the night ended, filing out to split up and head to Chicken Hut or Pharmacia.
