Limerick to be connected by transformative bus service

THE new proposed Bus Connects network for Limerick has the potential to transform the city’s bus service.

That’s according to Limerick Metropolitan District Cathaoirleach Olivia O’Sullivan, who has welcomed a new 24-hour bus route operating between University Hospital Limerick (UHL), the city centre, and the University of Limerick (UL).

“From the perspective of the Northside, for the first time people will be able to get a bus directly from the Caherdavin area to UL,” Cllr O’Sullivan told the Limerick Post.

“This is fantastic news for students and those working in Castletroy. There will be several routes ending in the UL campus from Coonagh Cross, The Jetland, or Moylish.

“Three services will start/finish at the Coonagh Cross Shopping Centre where Tesco is located, and the new TUS Coonagh campus.”

The City North representative was especially happy to see the Ennis Road finally getting its own bus service, which she believes was “long overdue”.

“Clonmacken and the Condell Road are getting a new service that runs from Jetland to the train station, and I have requested additional stops at Barrington’s Pier/Ted Russell Park and Westfields along this route so residents of the North Circular Road will also have access to this service,” Cllr O’Sullivan explained.

“In the proposed plans, the stop at Brookville Avenue has been removed however, I have asked the National Transport Authority (NTA) to review this and they are looking at the possibility of the 2B service detouring to collect/drop here, or another service.”

The new Bus Connects network won’t be coming on-stream until 2025 but public consultation on the proposed new network is currently underway and finishes on April 7.
