Niall Quinn of The Hitchers, Theme Tune Boy and The Cranberry Saw Us marks his half century with a Seoda Shows promoted gig at Kasbah, Dolans on Friday March 10. NIALL QUINN IS 50 …and won’t get off the stage sees Niall accompanied by a full band plus guests. Expect to hear three sets featuring plenty of The Hitchers with whom he drummed/drums, Theme Tune Boy with whom he sings and Half Man Half Biscuit whose songs he evangelises to the Irish. Niall says, “t aint all gonna be retrospection either. There’ll be a new single to celebrate as well as it’s long past time to crack on with some fresh meat.”
This is Ann Blake’s interview with Niall talking about the three things that matter to the musician playing this Friday
About The Hitchers: Niall Quinn founded Limrock legends The Hitchers as a 15 year old in the late 80’s along with Hoss Carnage and Eoin O’Kelly. Their off-kilter lyrics and terrace chant chorus’ took them quite a way. The band released two albums and a bagful of singles and EPs throughout the 90’s. Championed by the likes of John Peel and Steve Lamacq they were hotly tipped by many but in truth, in an era dominated by Britpop, always had their faces pressed against the cold side of the glass looking in from outside. Though long since splendidly retired -renewed interest in the band following their inclusion on Lamacqs 2019 compilation vinyl Lost Alternatives led to last years 25th Anniversary re-issue of their debut album It’s All Fun & Games Til Somone Loses An Eye. https://www.hotpress.com/culture/limerick-indie-band-the-hitchers-to-play-dolans-this-october-22931267
About Theme Tune Boy: Since The Hitchers stood down from active service Quinn has released music under several guises –most prominently as Theme Tune Boy with whom he eschews his Hitchers role behind the drumkit to lead from the front of a four piece who’ve performed with The Damned, most recently Richie Ramone and who the Guardian describe as…
“A delirious amalgam of pop-punk, shot through with the acerbic yet touching wit and observational genius Quinn brought to his homage to the Scottish dynamo (Strachan). Fans of that tune will love his new work” http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/jul/13/ashes-the-open-f1-arsenal
About Half Arsed Half Biscuit: Half Arsed Half Biscuit are Quinns tribute to his heroes Half Man Half Biscuit. Though as Birkenhead’s finest are unlikely to ever come to Ireland for reasons that are their own -Half Arsed Half Biscuit sometimes prefer to think of themselves as proxies, emissaries, evangelists if you like. Preaching to the converted and hopefully converting the converteds girlfriend, boyfriend or mate from work.
“…replicating Nigel Blackwell’s leaden tone to perfection. It is always surprising when he talks in his own Limerick accent between songs” https://thecorribnotes.blogspot.com/2018/01/half-arsed-half-biscuit-at-bello-bar-13.html
“…the songs were all performed brilliantly, without a note out of place, in a Birkenhead accent that left **** (Birkenheader attendee) open-mouthed.” https://halfmanhalfbiscuit.uk/the-other-bands/
