WORLD Glaucoma Week (March 12-18), an annual campaign aiming to raise awareness around the damaging eye condition, is upon us.
Glaucoma is a common condition that leads to damage of the optic nerve to the back of the eye that sends visual information between the eye and the brain. The brain is also associated with being responsible for vision quality.
Glaucoma has been known at any age, but it is generally most common in over-60s. It is also the second most common cause of blindness in Ireland.
Risk factors include age, high intraocular pressures, diabetes, use of steroids, and eye injuries. Family history can also play a large part.
Many glaucmoa cases don’t display physical symptoms, and are usually picked up during routine eye tests.
An optometrist can help screen for early onset signs of glaucoma, including assessing the optic disc at the back of the eye, looking for telltale signs of nerve damage. They can also check for intraocular pressure.
There is no cure for glaucoma, but it is easily treatable if diagnosed early with daily drop therapy and can help preserve vision.
