THE funeral of a well-known figure in Limerick sport is taking place this morning.
James Flanagan, who died at his home in Castletroy last Wednesday, was a stalwart in the sports world locally, most notably for being involved with Fairview Rangers soccer club..
The club led tributes to Mr Flanagan online saying he made a “huge contribution to the club in different roles throughout the years.”
They added that they were “massively grateful for his efforts,” during his involvement with the club.
His colleagues from TUS have said that James was “a gentleman and a scholar” and a “kind, gentle and hard-working man.”
He survived by his partner Fiona (Geraghty); son, Jack; mother Irene; sister Jean-Claire, relatives and a wide circle of friends.
All matches and training sessions at Fairview Rangers were cancelled over the weekend, with Pike Rovers FC observing a minute’s silence before their match with Aisling Annacotty on Sunday.
Funeral Mass is taking place in St. John’s Cathedral this morning, with burial afterwards to Mount Saint Lawrence Cemetery Extension.
