Lynch return a welcome boost for Limerick

Cian Lynch signing autographs after the National League win over Clare.

AMONG the many highlights of Limerick’s routine disposal of Clare in the latest round of the Allianz National Hurling League was the first start in nearly a year of Cian Lynch.

The two-time Hurler of the Year, who turned 27 last month, appeared sharp during his hour-long appearance in front of another tremendous crowd. His contribution included 15 plays, the winning of three frees, two assists, an important involvement in one score, along with an early point.

Summarising his performance, manager John Kiely said: “He’s a lot of work still to do, he knows that himself. But it’s fantastic to see him back on the field. He’s a huge part of our group and it was a tough, tough season for him, but he’s moved on, we’ve moved on. He’s now back to full fitness.  He has a bit of work to do, but no more than anybody else.”

Shortly after missing-out on the 2022 All-Ireland Final defeat of Kilkenny, a philosophical Lynch reasoned: “At the end of the day I’m able to get up in the morning and get out of the bed and be able to go into training with this group of lads that are a family and have a smile on my face and that’s what life is about so it’s a privilege to be a part of it.”

Lynch and his colleagues continue to be box-office appeal, with an attendance of close on 16,000 at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday night, with almost 20,000 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh the previous weekend.

Another 15,000 are likely to be at Pearse Stadium in Salthill when the All-Ireland winners tackle Galway on Sunday week.

On the injury front, David Reidy and Fergal O’Connor have joined captain Declan Hannon on the treatment table following knocks picked-up at the weekend.
