Work needed at Limerick roundabout to improve access to motorway

Deputy Kieran O'Donnell at the Mackey Roundabout

LIMERICK Fine Gael TD Kieran O’Donnell, who is Chairman of the Oireachtas Transport committee, is campaigning for significant improvements at the Mackey Roundabout to alleviate serious traffic congestion at the Castletroy entrance to theย M7 motorway .

โ€œThere is a very large back-up of traffic at the Mackey Roundabout ย particularly in the mornings and evenings with traffic stretching back on the Dublin Road to the Annacotty (Vistakon) roundabout and into the National Technological Park,” he explained.

“This causes enormous delays and a high degree of frustration for people who use the Mackey roundabout to get to and from work.ย I have been working with Limerick City and County Council to progress improvements at the roundabout over the last year.

โ€œThis year, the Council secured โ‚ฌ50,000 to carry out a feasibility study to come up with a detailed plan for the improvement works.ย I have asked the National Transport Authority to prioritise this project in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.

“The Council is about to appoint contractors to carry out ย improvements on the Dublin Road at the Cappamore Road junction. It is expected that contractors will be on site by next April with the work taking around six months to complete.

โ€œIt will involve the construction of two new slip lanes, footpaths, cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, public lighting, drainage, road markings, signage and carriageway resurfacing,”Deputy O’Donnell added.
