Limerick’s Billy Lee in running for Horse Racing Ireland award

TOP Limerick jockey Billy Lee has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2022 Ride of the Year Award, which will be announced at the Horse Racing Ireland Awards next month. 

On this occasion, it will be fans who are being called upon to select the winner and voting is open here

Lee, who finished runner-up to Colin Keane in this season’s Flat Championship, has been nominated for the ride he gave Treasure Trove to win the Heider Family Stables Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh in August. 

Only a few days earlier, the Paddy Twomey trained star, with Lee in the saddle, scored a sensational victory in the Listed Julia Graves Roses Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival.

Videos of each nominated ride and the link to the dedicated voting webpage can be found on hri.ie and easy access to the voting page is widely available on Horse Racing Ireland’s social media platforms.

Voting will remain open until 5pm on Wednesday next. 

The nominations for the 2022 Ride of the Year Award are:

Siobhan Rutledge: Atavique – BoyleSports Irish EBF Ulster Oaks Fillies Handicap – Down Royal, June 18.

Mark Walsh: A Great View – Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle – Punchestown, April 28.

Billy Lee: Treasure Trove – Heider Family Stables Round Tower Stakes – the Curragh, August 27.

Liam McKenna: Tudor City – Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap – Galway, July 28.

Wayne Lordan: Waterville – Friends Of The Curragh Irish Cesarewitch – the Curragh, September 25.

Awards will also be presented in nine other categories: Horse of the Year, Emerging Talent Award, National Hunt Award, National Hunt Achievement Award, Flat Award, Flat Achievement Award, Point-to-Point Award, Contribution to the Industry and Irish Racing Hero Award.

Meanwhile, Askeaton’s long association with point-to-point racing continues on Sunday next when it stages an attractive fixture.

The opening race is timed for noon.
