A CAR-crazy Limerick man, who came before Limerick District Court this week with 271 previous convictions is addicted to driving, a judge was told.
Judge Patricia Harney was hearing the case against Greg Russell (35) of The Orchard, Caherconlish who pleaded guilty to further offences including driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.
The court heard that Mr Russell was disqualified from driving by a court for fifteen years on December 15, 2016 and sentenced to four months in jail.
The majority of his convictions were for driving offences, Sergeant Sean Murray told the court.
He had been stopped by Gardaí who had seized cars belonging to him including a Ford Transit van, a Volkswagen Golf and a BMW car.
Defending solicitor Ted McCarthy said that his client was stopped by Gardaí rather than having his banned status unearthed as a result of an accident or some other driving offence.
He agreed Mr Russell has a bad record “but like some people are addicted to drugs, he is addicted to driving.”
Judge Harney remarked that the accused is “approaching record status,” when it comes to breaking the road traffic laws.
The Judge banned him from driving for a total of 45 years and fined him €2,250 in total on the charges.
