A LIMERICK man has fallen foul of daring conmen who stole almost €4,000 from his bank account as part of a nationwide scam.
According to Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station, the man, who lives in Castletroy, received a text he believed to be from his bank. The text informed him that his bank account had been compromised and money removed from it.
“He rang the number and was informed that his bankcard must be returned to his bank immediately. Only then could a new bankcard be issued to him” Sgt Leetch explained, going on to say that the ‘bank’ told the man they would send someone to his home address to collect the card.
“The man agreed to this and a short time later he handed his bankcard to who he thought was a bank courier service. After a time, when no replacement bankcard had arrived, the man decided to check his bank account where he discovered that almost €4,000 was taken from his account. He rang his bank to cancel his card and told them what happened.
“Apparently this fraud has been used in other parts of the country too, not just in Limerick. It may seem obvious but never let your bankcard out of your sight,” Sgt Leetch urged.
