Limerick celebration to mark City of Culture anniversary

The Giant Granny was one of the highlights of the City of Culture programme

FINE Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan wants the tenth anniversary of Limerick’s year as City of Culture to be celebrated in 2024.

Speaking at this week’s Community, Leisure, and Culture SPC (Strategic Policy Committee) meeting, Cllr O’Sullivan outlined her belief that 2024 shouldn’t pass without commemorating the year Limerick took up its designation as the first Irish National City of Culture.

“We should reflect on the fantastic year we had. It was amazing,” Cllr O’Sullivan reminisced to council members.

The City North representative suggested that the City of Culture year was “overshadowed” by the Limerick bid as European Capital of Culture 2020 and asked the Council executive to look at funding streams to mark its tenth anniversary.

“2014 was a big year. We should do something to mark the tenth anniversary of City of Culture.”

In response, the Council noted that as a number of other people had also suggested this, they would look at how this could be achieved.
