Shannon Airport shortlisted for Age Friendly award

SHANNON Airport and Ireland West Airport have been shortlisted for a National Age Friendly Award.

Bothย airportsย became the first airports in the world to beย recognisedย as Age Friendly,ย endorsed by theย World Healthย Organisationย (WHO),ย in June of this year.

The airports have now jointly been shortlisted for the Age Friendly Transport Award, whichย recognisesย the vital difference that availability toย good quality, easily accessible,ย user friendly and reliable transport options can make to an older person.ย 

The awards, which will be held inย Dromolandย Castle,ย County Clare,ย willย be the first Age Friendlyย Awards heldย since 2019ย due to the impact of the pandemic,ย andย will be hostedย by Clare County Council.

CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, Mary Considine said:ย โ€œMakingย the passengers journey as easy as possible is at the core of everything we do here at Shannon Airport. Ourย team workedย hardย to getย Shannon Airportย recognised as one ofย the first Age Friendlyย Airportsย in the world, along withย Ireland Westย Airport.ย 

โ€œWe implementedย a number ofย initiatives across the airport to make itย easily accessible and user friendly for all ages,ย includingย designated age-friendly parking, better signage, and covered walkways fromย aircraftย into the terminal,ย as well asย ourย high-tech security scanning system whichย removes the 100ml only rule for liquids carried in cabin bags.

โ€œWe continue to enhance and further improve our facilities and service offering to ensure the airport experience for our customers is a relaxing and enjoyable one for all who use the facility, but particularly for those most vulnerable in society who rely on that extra personal touch and care which can be so important to them as they journey through the airport.โ€

The primary aim of theย National Age Friendly Awards is toย recogniseย and reward achievement in age friendly initiatives around Ireland.ย
