The Irish Times reports that the remaining calves were removed from the farm on Thursday. It is understood that some of the calves had to be euthanised, but the condition of the surviving animals is unclear.
The majority of the calves are dairy-bred bulls such as Friesians and Jerseys, which are viewed as low-value animals and are usually exported for the veal market overseas.
One of the farmers connected to the discovery of the dead animals has a previous conviction for animal cruelty, while another is understood to have already had his herd number stripped from him, and therefore is no longer permitted to keep animals.
It is believed that the farmers were given most of the calves at no cost.
