County Limerick drowning victim was top showjumping official

The late Ivan McDonagh

THE man who drowned while swimming at a popular County Limerick bathing spot on Thursday has been named locally as Ivan McDonogh, 71, who was a native of Askeaton.

Mr McDonogh was well-known in showjumping circles in Limerick and was a senior national course builder and judge. A lifelong supporter of the Limerick Foxhounds, he was Master of the Stonehall Harriers Hunt.

It is understood he got into difficulty while swimming at Kilteery Pier, near Loughill on the Shannon Estuary. Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident and are preparing a file for the Coroner’s office.

Askeaton based Fianna Fáil Councillor Kevin Sheahan said the incident has ‘’left the community in deep shock”.

“He was very interested in horses. Just this week I saw him in one of the papers and he was presenting a prize at a show. He was kind, gentle type of person,” Cllr Sheahan added.
