LIMERICK Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan has hit out at continuing delays to the promised law to allow for a Directly Elected Mayor for Limerick.
“Three years after the people of Limerick voted to create the office of a democratically elected mayor and there is still no sign of the necessary legislation to establish such a role,” Senator Gavan said .
Local Government Minister Peter Burke has now promised that the legislation will have completed its path through the Oireachtas by Christmas, although I note he doesn’t say which Christmas.
“The reality is that despite declaring this to be ‘priority legislation’, the role of Directly Elected Mayor for our city and county has been put on a permanent back-burner by this government,” Senator Gavan declared.
