Limerick Literary Festival honours life and legacy of Kate O’Brien

Limerick author Kate O'Brien

BECAUSE of the uncertainty created by the Covid pandemic, the Limerick Literary Festival, which usually takes place in February, was deferred to June 18 and 19.

The dates may have changed but the purpose remains the same – to promote Limerick as a place of literary excellence through a programme of exhibitions, poetry, talks and interviews.

The festival honours the life and works of Kate O’Brien, who was born in Limerick City in 1897. Her books focus on feminism and gender equality and two of them, ‘Mary Lavelle’ (1936) and ‘The Land of Spices’ (1941) were banned in Ireland by the Censorship of Publications Board.

She died in 1974 and a collection of her work can be found at the Glucksman Library in the University of Limerick.
