Limerick were beaten by just one point in this year’s U20 All Ireland hurling Final, as Kilkenny lifted the cup in Semple Stadium winning 0-19 to 0-18.
It was tit-for-tat all day with both sides very evenly matched as Kilkenny only managing to gain a two point advantage with ten minutes to play.
The Treaty men were shut out by the Cats who managed their lead very well, keeping the Shannonsiders at arms reach until the final whistle.
The Munster men have battled all year to get to this stage and falling at the final hurdle will be a bitter pill to swallow for the youngsters.
Limerick manager Diarmuid Mullins reflects on the battle and looks forward to coming back with a bang next season with a lot of the group still eligible to play.
“I think we’ve seven lads from the starting team who are under age again next year and plenty of lads in the replacements aswell and the extended panel. They’ve been a credit to all the older lads who were finishing up, they’ve been a credit to Limerick,”
With the teams so evenly matched and the low scoring game it made for a more tactical and persistent battle.
Mullins felt there were opportunities there for his side on the day but the game just didn’t swing their way.
“Disappointment when you lose by a point, everybody’s disappointed at that and you’re looking at what if’s but look that’s just the way it goes in a game like that.
“Maybe some of the games in Munster have been more high scoring, but I suppose you’d two undefeated teams, two teams that had to battle to get to an All Ireland final and that’s what it was it was a battle and we came up a little bit short.”
