A CASTLETROY College student has been awarded first place at this year’s Limerick Mathematical Olympiad.

Rory Moore took top prize ahead of a three-way tie for second place between Castletroy College’s Myron Butler, Kilrush Community School’s Nikodem Dutkiewicz and Aaron Waldron of Mungret Community College.

Third place was awarded to Diego Sun from Glenstal Abbey in Murroe.

The competition, which is jointly organised by the Mathematics Departments at Mary Immaculate College and the University of Limerick is a preparation contest for next month’s Irish Mathematical Olympiad in early May.

The best students in the national Olympiad qualify for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Oslo next July.

Speaking at the awards ceremony for the Limerick Olympiad last Thursday, MIC maths lecturer Dr Ronan Flatley said he was impressed by the creativity of the best-performing students at the event.

“They came up with some solutions that I had not anticipated. It is a great pleasure to work with these young people and to support their development as problem-solvers,”he added
