THE oil on canvas painting depicts vivid representations of Ukrainian people, dressed in their national colours. But overhead is darkness in the shape of Russian helicopters intent on raining destruction on the scene below.
The painting is the work of Dooradoyle artist, David Murphy who is planning to sell it to raise funds for the Ukrainian Red Cross appeal.
David created the 3ft by 4ft work in response to a call out out from members of the Irish Artists Facebook page to donate pieces of art to raise funds to support the Ukrainian people.
The group’s appeal for artwork met with a big response and so far, more than 100 works have been donated.
Describing the painting, David told the Limerick Post: “The people in it are terrified – they’re running and they don’t know where to go, while the Russian helicopter is there to kill them.”
It took David four days of intense work to complete the painting.
An amateur artist, David says this work is not in his usual style but the horror and gravity of the situation shaped it.
“This is a very serious situation, certainly for the people of Ukrainian but this could turn into World War Three and then we are all in it.
“I’m hoping that people will be moved to donate to the Red Cross even if they are not going to buy a painting,” said David.
He has not put any particular price on the work, but hopes that offers will be generous. “People can make the cheque out to the Red Cross. I don’t want a penny from this,” he said.
