Limerick man on trial for Shannon nightclub murder

A LIMERICK man who denies murdering a 23-year-old man at a nightclub in Shannon four years ago has told a court that he is guilty of manslaughter. 

Nathan O’Neill of Hill Top Drive, Dooradoyle was arraigned at the Central Criminal Court in Cork on Monday on a charge of murdering Jamie Higgins at the Shannon Knights nightclub at Tullyvarraga, Shannon on March 18, 2018.

When asked how he pleaded to the charge, he replied: “Not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.”

He entered a guilty plea to a second charge that, on the same occasion, he intentionally or recklessly caused serious harm to Michael Shannon.

The trial on the murder charge is due to commence today.

Before a jury was empanelled to hear the case, Ms Justice Eileen Creedon said it was estimated that the trial would take approximately two weeks.
