JOHNSON & Johnson Vision has announced a €35 million investment in its Limerick operation with the potential to create up to 200 new jobs over the next three years, including roles in construction.

Over the past 25 years, the Johnson & Johnson Vision campus in Castletroy has developed into one of the largest contact lens manufacturing facilities in the world, with a workforce of 1,600 people.

Operations Director for Ireland John Fitzgibbon said that the continuing  growth of the company’s manufacturing operations in Limerick would help millions of people suffering from vision impairment or blindness caused by cataract or uncorrected refractive error.

Welcoming the company’s latest investment, Minister of State and Limerick Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins said it clearly signalled Johnson & Johnson’s desire to expand their advanced manufacturing footprint in Ireland.

“The creation of 200 new jobs for the region also proves we can deliver a talented and skilled workforce ready to tackle some of the greatest challenges facing society. There is no doubt that the Johnson & Johnson Vision operations in Limerick are world-leading, and we can be proud that the results of that work will help people right across the world,” Minister Collins added.

In addition to contact lens manufacturing, the Limerick campus also serves as base for Johnson & Johnson’s Advanced Technology Centre which designs and makes automated manufacturing equipment for new and existing manufacturing processes.

There is also a Software Development Centre, specialising in the development of the company’s supply chain, customer management, digital, data analytics and manufacturing systems.

The company has a strong focus on career progression through continuous education and has supported more than 300 employees in developing skills in new technologies since 2016.

Johnson & Johnson Vice President Gaspar Zuniga said the latest investment allows for the continued growth of the company’s operations in Ireland.

“Our 25 years’ experience working in Ireland is remarkable and the expansion of our site is proof of our employees’ commitment to help more patients around the globe,” he added.

Recruitment is currently underway across a range of roles including in operations, engineering and quality control.
