Additional Covid vaccination recommended for those with weak immune systems

THE Department of Public Health Mid-West, the UL Hospitals Group, and HSE Mid West Community Healthcare is encouraging people with weak immune systems to avail of an additional Covid-19 vaccination.

The additional dose for the immunocompromised has been recommended by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee and the Europeans Medicines Agency.

Circulation of Covid-19 has declined since the Omnicron variant in January but the HSE has warned there is still widespread transmission among communities and this is likely to remain high in the coming weeks.

It is recommended that those who are immunocompromised should get their first round doses, additional dose and booster dose to fully protect themselves from serious illness or death.

Those with weak immune systems or are immunocompromised have been sent a message notification for their booster appointment by the HSE.

Mid West Covid vaccination operations manager Nora Barry said that all vaccination centres are hosting walk-in booster vaccine clinics, which are particularly important for those who are immunocompromised and remain vulnerable to Covid infection.

“Check the times on the HSE website, and please remember that if you’re eligible for a booster, you may attend a walk-in clinic at any of the vaccination centres, regardless of your county of residence,” she explained.
