LIMERICK Education Centre (LEC) have partnered with Revenue to deliver a new course for transition year students that will help them untangle the intricacies of the taxation system .
The aim of the module is to help students to understand Revenue’s role in collecting taxes and duties, what taxes are used for and the importance of tax compliance. It also teaches students how to register their first job and to identify if they are paying the right tax.
Limerick Education Center Director Norma O’Brien said that students had engaged well with the first pilot module which was introduced at Thomond Community College (TCC) in Limerick City. Students who participated in the course provided positive and helpful feedback.
”It brings huge benefits to students and plays a part in preparing them for life after school and developing their understanding of tax.
Revenue’s Service Policy manager, Margaret O’Connor said the module for transition year students was an important initiative for Revenue and something they hoped to see available for all transition year students.
“We want to help our future customer by giving them the confidence to understand and manage their tax affairs.
“The module gives students the knowledge and skills to ensure that when they start their working life that they pay only the right amount of tax, at the right time. It also explains how they can claim tax back if they incur expenses such as health expenses during the year as well as giving a general understanding of what they need to do to be tax compliant,”Ms O’Connor added.
The first pilot module was taught by Business Studies teacher, Diarmuid Kelly last October. He will teach the second module this year with feedback from students from the first pilot module.
