A CONTRACTOR has been appointed for the construction of the new Limerick Educate Together Secondary School on the Groody Road to serve the greater Castletroy and adjoining communities.
The new €19 million building is being fast-track by the Department of Education as a Rapid 60 weeks duration project, with work expected to start in the next two months and the building to be opened by September 2023.
It will be built on a 14-acre site, across from the Northern Trust campus, and will cater for 1,000 pupils with almost 60 classrooms, an outdoor learning courtyard, as well as a sports hall with a fitness suite.
The Educate Together school is currently located in temporary accommodation at the old Salesians Secondary School on the North Circular Road.
Local Fine Gael TD Kieran O’Donnell, who has worked closely with School principal Eoin Shinners and the board of management on the project, said he was determined to get a new school building as possible for the extended Castletroy community.
“In terms of traffic management, I have held positive discussions with Limerick Council to push for two new roads linking the Groody Road with the Golf Links Road and Childers Road to be progressed as quickly as possible to alleviate traffic congestion.
“I also have asked for a significant investment in public transport, cycle lanes and walkways as part of these new link roads projects.
“I live in the area and have reared my family here and I understand the importance and need of this new school. It is something that Limerick Educate Together and the greater Castletroy area and adjoining communities will benefit greatly from.
“It will be a huge and credible addition to the growing population in the local communities,” he added.
