Council’s search for cemetery site making progress

St Mary's Cemetery Abbeyfeale

LIMERICK City and County Council is making progress with its efforts to acquire a suitable site for a new cemetery in Abbeyfeale and the process will be completed as soon as possible.

At last week’s meeting of the Newcastle West Municipal District, Cllr Liam Galvin (FG) was told by Council Director of Service for Planning, Nuala Gallagher that the acquisition was being handled by the local authority’s property department.

Ms Gallagher also informed him that repair works to both the boundary fence and drainage at Reilig Ide Naofa did not commence last year due to other committed works in the district.

“It is intended that these works will be completed under the work programmes for 2022/ 2023,” she said.

Cllr Jerome Scanlan (Ind) had earlier been told that there are 3,264 burial plots available in the 14 cemeteries owned and operated by the council in the Newcastle West Municipal District.
