THE Limerick swimming group won 18 medals at the 4th International Ice Swimming Championships They won 3 gold, 6 silver and 13 bronze.

Among those who won medals at the championships was Ger Purcell, a Guinness record holder who won a bronze medal along with Alan Gleeson, ice ironman and Liz Ryan who finished 1st in the 100m Breaststoke, in the age 40 to 44 female bracket.

The event was held over 3 days from 4 February to 7 February in Glogow, Poland and done in a 25 meter swimming pool with water temperatures under 5 degree celsius.

The Championships are run by the IISA (International Ice Swimming Association) who succeed in bringing ”ice swimming” to the Winter Olympics. 73 countries took part in the Ice Swimming World Championships this year.

The Limerick Narwhals were formed in 2016 and compete at National and International ice swimming competitions.

Their name comes from the Narwhal, a unicorn type whale that lives in the ice waters and can dive to over 1800m in one go.
