BILLED as one of the biggest sporting events in Limerick’s history, the World under-21 Lacrosse Championships will be held at the University of Limerick next August.
With 23 teams participating and more than 50,000 spectators from across the world, the event will also provide a significant boost for the local hospitality and tourism industries.
The Irish Under-21 Men’s team, which is currently ranked seventh in the world, will also be taking part in the games.
Regarded as the fastest growing team sport in the world, lacrosse has many similarities to hurling and those similarities will be highlighted on Tuesday when the championship programme will be announced at a press conference at Plassey House on the UL campus.
The event will be attended by Limerick All-Ireland senior hurling captain Declan Hannon and US professional lacrosse player Grant Ament who will demonstrate some of the finer points of both games.
Chief executive of the Attack Academy, an online coaching app that he developed with other lacrosse professionals, Grant Ament was voted fourth best player in the world and received the 2021 Attackman of the Year award.
