Mad music, strong wine and a heap o’ haggis

Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns, is widely acknowledged as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated globally including Limerick

“Dress yourself with garments fine,
Tonight we dance, tonight we dine,
With mad music and strong wine.”

A NIGHT of mad music and strong wine is promised this week for the annual celebration of Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) pictured.
Michael Potter got in touch with Limerick Post to say that Robbie Burns night will be filled with poem and song, pipe and fiddle music.
“It’s very colourful. We have Michael Egan on the bagpipes and lots of haggis and Scottish biscuits.”
This Limerick celebration of the life and legacy of the legendary Scottish poet is organised annually by Michael and Noel Flannery. The Scottish residents have marked Robert Burns Night for eighteen years now, with the first fifteen years being held in Bobby Byrne’s Bar, before a January 2020 switch to Dolans due to crowds getting bigger each year.
Robert Burns Night celebrations have been held since 1801, five years after the death of the ‘Scottish Bard’. Burns Night continues to be celebrated across the globe to this day.
This gathering in Limerick to revel in all things Scottish will be all the more poignant as it is being held in the memory of co-founder Noel Flannery who died last April.
Robbie Burns Night happens in Dolans this Tuesday January 25 from 5pm.
