LIMERICK were beaten late on by Tipperary in the second round of the McGrath Cup
“You can’t have excuses when you miss chances like that”.
Reflecting on their last minute loss to Tipperary in Mick Neville Park on Sunday afternoon, Limerick manager Billy Lee called it a missed opportunity as the Premier county brought their pre season to an end.
In a honest summation of the game, Lee highlighted how the contest got away from his side late on as they squandered the lead they held for the majority of the match in injury time.
With the result eliminating Limerick from the McGrath Cup, Lee insisted that the result was a damaging one with Limerick “needing momentum” as they gear up for a second season in Division 3 of the National Football League, starting with Longford later this month.
“Limerick football needs momentum going into the league. Winning gives you a positive mentality and that’s a game we should have won.
“And when you don’t win, it leaves a big gap until your next competitive game at home to Longford in the League.
The Newcastle West native has used a number of new faces in the games with Kerry and Tipperary but outlines that there is still much work to be done with conditioning an issue down the stretch against Tipp.
“We have a lot of work to do to bridge that gap in terms of strength and conditioning. You could see their ability on the ball but conditioning, they’re not able to keep up with lads who may not have the same abiity as theirs”
Lee also confirmed the departure of Brian Fanning who informed the management of his decision earlier this week with the Pallasgreen man residing in Dublin.
The full back, who has spent six seasons with the side has nailed down the full back berth in recent years.
His departure adds to that of Danny Neville, Tommie Childs, Seamus O’Carroll, David Connolly, Ger Stack and Cormac Roche.
