Limerick animal welfare group wants wildlife road safety measures

-

THE LIMERICK branch of the Party For Animal Welfare (PAW) has called for better measures to prevent wildlife being killed on public roads.

Spokesperson for the party, Gerben Uunk, said that the Limerick branch is “very concerned about the increasing number of animals killed on rural and urban roads throughout Limerick and East Clare”.

Describing as “criminal” the loss of deers, badgers and foxes, Mr Uunk said that the party  “implores Limerick County Council in tandem with the National Road Authority to be proactive in persuading drivers to take more care with regards to our precious wildlife”.

“Some appropriate signage would certainly be a welcome start. Drivers could be informed about defensive driving techniques, such as driving slowly at night.

“Many drivers swear by approaching deer warning signage’, but don’t reduce speed, they even flash at upcoming crossing animals, or they sound their horns loudly, which can cause some animals to panic and get disorientated and in turn cause a traffic accident.”

The PAW spokesman said members are also disappointed that no elected representatives have attended protests organised by the party.

“We have never seen any government TD or councillor at any of these protests unfortunately, nor hardly noticed any elected politician who raised their voices for the voiceless animals despite their animal welfare policies of several political parties. Actions speak louder than empty words in their policies or party manifesto.”
