MUNSTER now less likely to return home after a number of further positive cases are set to be confirmed within both squad and staff today.
Munster are set to remain in South Africa after their most recent round of PCR testing (Monday) included a number of further positive tests within the camp.
On Sunday, one Munster player within the travelling party tested positive, with another member of the group identified as a close contact. It remains unknown if any of these positive cases are of the ‘Omicron’ variant of Covid-19.
Sports Minister Jack Chambers had given the province permission to return to Ireland under the condition that the two individuals in question would remain in South Africa to isolate.
Now however Munster’s hopes of returning to Ireland grow slimmer, due to as many as nine positive cases are set to emerge from their most recent round of PCR testing, with countless others identified as close contacts.
Munster’s Champions Cup clash with Wasps on December now lies in a realm of doubt, as the time remaining for recovery, isolation and preparation now seems all but nonexistent.
Those within the camp who have tested positive, including close contacts, will now have to stay in isolation in the South African city of Cape Town until they are given permission by the relevant authorities to depart.
Until further notice, Munster are still set to face Wasps in their first game of the Heineken Champions Cup at the Coventry Building Society Arena on December 12th, with kick-off at 3:15pm.
