Jack Lynch “We just want to go out and get results”

TREATY United entertain UCD tonight in the first leg of the Airtricity League play-off semi-final at the Markets Field.

It has been a superb season for the newly formed senior men’s team who were accepted into the league as late as February of this year. The Limerick side finished fourth in an ultra-competitive first division.

Captain Jack Lynch was central to the club’s season as the midfielder scored 5 goals and gained 3 assists while leading by example for Tommy Barrett and his management team.

Lynch is no stranger to the play-offs as he and his Galway United teammates suffered heartbreak against UCD in the final of the first division section. Lynch said that the mantra has changed from league to cup football and performances aren’t as important as getting results.

“It changes now from league to cup football. Whatever about the performance, its about results now. At the beginning, people were just happy with us putting in a few good performances due to how the team got into the league but now it will be results driven.

“We wouldn’t care if we failed to play two passes together for the 90 minutes as long as we come out with a 1-0 win. Myself and Luds (Marc Ludden) will be passing that on to the lads.”

Lynch said he always believed that the side could make the play-offs this season and this belief grew stronger after just one game; the 0-0 draw against Bray Wanderers on the opening day.

“I knew after the first game against Bray when we went down to ten men. Once you are in a squad with lads who have some bottleand the ability to grind out results, then you know its just a case of getting the quality together. There have been ups and downs but there was never a moment’s doubt in my head that we could do it.”

Treaty have played UCD on three occasions this season, winning the home game and losing the two away games. Lynch says it vital that they take the positives into Wednesday night’s meeting in a bid to exploit their opposition.

“We will take certain things from those 3 games and try put a game plan together to get at them. Every game has been decided by a goal. The first half of the first game against UCD was probably the best football we played all season and against the footballing quality of UCD nobody expected that. We will be looking to take the good things in each of those games and look to rule out the sloppy mistakes we made.”

Lynch is hoping that his teammates can relish the bog crowd that will be supporting the side and come out on the right side of the result.

“I do hope some of the lads dont get overwhelmed by it. We just want to go out and put on a performance as we were doing that when there was no crowds. Now that the crowds have come back it’s a privilege to play in front of them. Hopefully, we will get as close to a sell out as we can. Some parts of the game might not be as pretty as people hoped for, but hopefully we will come out on the right side of the result.”
