PREVIEW | Adare and Newcastle collide under the Gaelic Grounds lights with the SFC title up for grabs

NEWCASTLE West and Adare take centre stage this Friday evening under lights at the TUS Gaelic Grounds as they face off for Limerick Senior Football Championship honours.

A repeat pairing from the 2017 decider, Adare will be seeking a fourth title in five years while the Magpies seek a third triumph since 2015.

The pair have been the standard bearers in recent years claiming five of the last six titles on offer.

Looking to retain their title, Adare have been on an incredible run in the championship since their relegation in 2015.

Immediate promotion back to the top tier followed at the first time of asking, with the West side then winning a maiden title at the senior level at Newcastle West’s expense in 2017.

They repeated in 2018 before losing their crown to Newcastle West in the semi-finals twelve months later.

But a third title in four years followed in 2020 for Harry Gleeson’s men as they beat Newcastle en route to recapturing the title.

Path to the Final

Adare

  • Rd 1: beat Oola 1-13 to 0-6
  • Rd 2: beat Na Piarsaigh 1-13 to 0-6
  • QF: beat Ballysteen 1-9 to 0-8
  • SF: beat Galtee Gaels 0-18 to 1-6

Newcastle West

  • Rd 1: beat Galally 0-9 to 0-7
  • Rd 2: beat Fr Caseys 3-12 to 0-11
  • QF: beat Claughaun 1-15 to 1-6
  • SF: beat Monaleen 0-11 to 0-10

This year, they have picked up four successive wins, starting with a pair of comfortable victories over Na Piarsaigh and Oola before outlasting Ballysteen in the quarter-finals. Their best display came in the semi-final win over Galtee Gaels as they ran out 0-18 to 1-6 winners.

Likewise, Newcastle West have won each of their games this year, getting over the line against Galbally in round one before disposing of Fr Caseys. They eased past Claughaun in the quarters but were pushed all the way by Monaleen in their 0-11 to 0-10 win in the semi-final.

Previous Meetings

  • 2020 SFC QF: Adare 1-13 : 0-11 Newcastle West
  • 2019 SFC SF: Newcastle West 2-10 : 1-7 Adare
  • 2017 SFC Final: Adare 2-10 : 1-10 Newcastle West
  • 2015: Adare 2-5 : 0-9 Newcastle West
  • 2014: Newcastle West 0-16 : 1-12 Adare
  • 2013: Newcastle West 4-12 : 0-7 Adare
  • 2010: Adare 2-7 : 0-12 Newcastle West

Since Adare’s return to the top tier, 2018 aside when the teams didn’t cross paths, the winner of this fixture has gone on to win the championship, a trend that will continue on Friday.

Adare hold a pair of victories in that time, the 2-10 to 1-10 win in the 2017 decider and last year’s five point victory.

Newcastle hold just the one victory, but it was the most comprehensive win, 2-10 to 1-7 in the 2019 semi-final.

For Adare, a large contingent from the 2017 winning side remain to the fore in the likes of the Bourke brothers, the Connollys’, the Lyons’ and Shane Doherty to name a few.

Newcastle have experience in the form of Iain Corbett, Mike Quilligan, James Kelly and Mike McMahon with their strength in depth highlighted by Limerick U20s captain Brian Foley often resigned to the bench.

Adare are 8/11 favourites to retain their crown but neither team has yet to win two on the bounce against one another and Newcastle West’s squad depth could ensure that remains the case.

Adare and Newcastle West meet in the Limerick SFC Final on Friday October 29 in the TUS Gaelic Grounds. The game will be streamed live on Limerick GAA TV.
